Merry Christmas, Television Junkies

It’s the most wonderful time of the year! I’m taking off on Christmas PTO after today and have a glorious week off work to eat allllll the Christmas cookies, drink hot chocolate, and binge watch all my favorite Christmas episodes of television. There are many hotly debated articles out there about what the “best Christmas episode ever” of different shows are. I’m not saying my opinions are right, but I’m not saying they’re wrong either.

So here’s my fool proof guide to watching the best Christmas episodes ever. Also, most can be found on YouTube, Hulu, or Netflix, so you’re welcome.

  • Friends “The One With The Girl From Poughkeepsie” Season 4, Episode 10.
    •  In this episode, Ross meets a girl he’s interested in on the train, but doesn’t find out until late in their ride that she lives in Poughkeepsie, which turns out to be the only down side to this dating prospect.

Meanwhile, Phoebe is working on a holiday song — one that rhymes every character’s name — which proves frustrating AF because she can’t think of anything good that rhymes with “Monica.” The song she delivers in the end is an instant Christmas classic, at least as far as I’m concerned. I’ve had this song in my head for WEEKS!

  • How I Met Your Mother “How Lily Stole Christmas” Season 2, Episode 11.
    • Lily takes away her Christmas display after she finds out that Ted called her a bad name while she was broken up with Marshall, and Barney is too sick for his Christmas plans. She crams allllll her Christmas decor into a tiny, nasty apartment and for some reason it’s hilarious to me.
  • Gossip Girl “Roman Candle” Season 1, Episode 11.
    • OK SO IT’S MOSTLY ABOUT THE PARENTS. It’s Christmas on the Upper East Side, and Blair is thrilled to have her father come to visit for the holidays – but is disappointed to find that he has brought his boyfriend (that he left the family for!), Roman, along with him. This episode gave a TINY bit of redemption to Blair’s character by showing her complicated relationship with her father after he left for France, and how we also learned a lot about her mother, Eleanor, through the process as well.
  • Gilmore Girls “Women of Questionable Morals” Season 5, Episode 11.
    • Luke builds Lorelai an ice skating rink and that’s all you need to know to understand how great this is.
  • Arrested Development “Afternoon Delight” Season 2, Episode 6.
    • When George Michael won’t help his dad rebuild the Frozen Banana Stand in their annual holiday tradition because he’s too busy bein’ a teen and hangin’ with Ann (“her?”) it hit me with all the guilty feels from my angsty teenage years when I chose friends over family. (SORRY, MOM!)

I’m sure I have more, but I won’t put you through my television ramblings. What’s your favorite Christmas television special?

Also, no matter how you celebrate- Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays! See you after Christmas!

XOXO. Taylor
