The last 2 minutes of the 2017 Oscars was probably one of the most uncomfortable moments in recent television history.
La La Land had just won best picture. Ryan Gosling, Emma Stone, and the rest of the cast were headed to the stage when… “Sorry! There’s been a mistake. Moonlight, you won best picture!”
Embarrassing moments aside, the Oscars is my favorite award show of the year. This year, I will have seen all NINE Best Picture nominees. I mean, I only saw 20 minutes of Darkest Hour because it was such a snooze-fest, but I’m still counting it!
Sure the Oscars are unpredictable & there’s been many snubs over the years, but that unpredictability isn’t going to stop me from placing my bets. And crossing my fingers for my favorites.
And the Oscar 2K18 Predictions are….
Best Picture Nominees:
Call Me By Your Name, Darkest Hour, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, The Shape of Water, The Post, Lady Bird, Phantom Thread, Get Out, Dunkirk.
Prediction: The Shape of Water. This movie is getting so much hype. It was good. But Pan’s Labyrinth was better in my opinion.
My favorite: It’s hard to pick a favorite from the nominees because I love Christopher Nolan (director of Dunkirk) movies, I love Tom Hanks (starred in The Post), and Lady Bird was so reminiscent of my own high school years, but I have to say Get Out was my favorite. It was so unexpected and so well-done.
Best Actress Nominees:
Meryl Streep (The Post), Sally Hawkins (The Shape of Water), Frances McDormand (Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri), Saoirse Ronan (Lady Bird), Margot Robbie (I, Tonya)
Prediction: Sally Hawkins. I may not have loved this movie, but her performance was great.
My favorite: Saoirse Ronan. I love most things that she does honestly.
Best Actor Nominees:
Gary Oldman (Darkest Hour), Denzel Washington (Roman J. Israel Esq.), Daniel Kaluuya (Get Out), Daniel Day-Lewis (Phantom Thread), Timothee Chalamet (Call Me By Your Name)
Prediction: Gary Oldman. I’m convinced his performance is largely the reason this movie is getting so much buzz. However, I could also see Daniel Day-Lewis winning, based solely on the fact that this is his last role before he retires from acting.
My favorite: Daniel Kaluuya. No contest. He was also great in Black Panther if you haven’t seen that yet.
Best Director Nominees:
Christopher Nolan (Dunkirk), Jordan Peele (Get Out), Paul Thomas Anderson (Phantom Thread), Guillermo del Toro (The Shape of Water), Greta Gerwig (Lady Bird)
Prediction: Guillermo del Toro. I just fully expect The Shape of Water to dominate this year.
My favorite: As much as I want Nolan to nab an Oscar, Jordan Peele is my favorite for this category.
Best Animated Feature Film Nominees:
The Breadwinner, Coco, Ferdinand, Loving Vincent, The Boss Baby
Prediction: Coco. The Boss Baby would never win an Oscar.
My favorite: Coco. Hands down.
There’s my picks for the big ones! Let me know what your picks are in the comments.
